Foundations Below the Frost Line
Foundation and basement excavation is the dig for a new home's basement or crawl space, the footings for an addition or garage, and the backfill once the walls are in. In the Buffalo area, two things decide how the job goes: frost, which sets how deep footings must be, and clay, which decides how the hole behaves and how the backfill settles.
Frost depth
With January averaging 25.5 degrees and long stretches below freezing, footings must sit below the local frost depth set by the building code and your town's building department. Shallow footings heave. We dig to the depth on the approved plans.
Clay and groundwater
Clay soils stand well in a cut when dry but slump when wet, and they drain slowly. On the old Lake Tonawanda bed north of the city, parts of Amherst have had collapsing foundations tied to unstable soil. Where that history exists, a soil evaluation before design is worth it. In low areas near creeks, groundwater can fill a basement hole overnight, and pumping becomes part of the job.
Additions and garages
Additions beside older Buffalo homes mean digging next to foundations of stone, block or brick, sometimes on shallow footings. We dig in sections where needed and backfill promptly so the old wall stays supported.
Backfill
Backfill against new walls goes in after they cure and after waterproofing and footing drains are installed. Clay is not ideal backfill; where specified we use free-draining material against the wall and compact the rest in lifts. Poor backfill is the reason so many stoops, walks and patios beside newer houses sink within a few winters.
Costs
HomeBlue's Buffalo estimates put a new-home basement dig at about $3,700 to $6,400, roughly two and a half days of machine time in normal soil. HomeGuide's national figures for a full basement project, which include more of the work, run $10,000 to $30,000 depending on depth.
Permits
New foundations need a building permit, and footings are usually inspected before concrete. We coordinate the dig with your builder and inspector.
Spoil on small lots
A basement produces a lot of soil, and city and inner-suburb lots have little room to stockpile it. We plan how much stays for backfill and how much is hauled immediately, so the lot stays usable during construction.

How It Works
1. Plan review
Plans, depths and over-dig reviewed with you or the builder.
2. Locate and stake
Utility locate requested; corners staked.
3. Excavate
Dug below frost to plan; groundwater pumped if needed.
4. Backfill
After walls cure, backfill placed and compacted, grade set.

Foundation & Basement Excavation Questions
How deep do footings go around Buffalo?
Below the frost depth set by the building code and your building department. We dig to the approved plans.
What if groundwater fills the hole?
We pump it and protect the bottom so footings go on firm, undisturbed soil.
Should I test the soil?
In areas with known soil problems, such as parts of Amherst on the old lakebed, a soil evaluation before design is wise.
Who backfills?
We do, after walls cure and waterproofing and drains are in.
